1. Introduction to the topic

This month is Men’s Health Month. This is something that is very close to our heart. Men’s health whether it be mental or physical is really important.

Too often men might find it hard or difficult to discuss their health or mental state of mind because of the “stereotype” that men don’t cry. And expressing feelings could make them less of a man.

Despite the changes where getting men to talk is highly encouraged, unfortunately, there is still a stigma attached to this.

We understand how important it is for men to talk about things they might be going through or things that might be worrying them. This is especially true as certain health conditions affect men more than women.

Grief Probate Journey feels it is important to highlight Men’s Health and its importance and the services that are available for men. In this topic, we have been fortunate to collaborate with a very inspirational young man Nathaniel McLean who is making a change for boys, men, and parents of children who might be experiencing difficulties in life.  When we met him right away, we knew we wanted to work with him for such an important cause.

At Grief Probate Journey, one of the main reasons we started our blog was to try and help raise further awareness of matters that are not necessarily highlighted enough. When our Dad was diagnosed with the life-threatening heart condition Infective Endocarditis we were in shock. We had never heard of this condition. And we had no idea of the complications that would follow due to this condition. As a family, it was an extremely difficult time. This is why we will always try our best to continue spreading awareness whenever possible. We have done topics on:

Our Dad wasn’t a person to ask for help, he was a very independent man. He was smart, intelligent, funny, and creative. A very generous man that stuck to his word. He was always willing to help people however he could, however he never liked asking for help. If he could do it himself, he would. Even when he was in hospital with us visiting him and everything, we were doing for him, he didn’t want to feel like a burden. Our Dad would never be a burden to us. He was a kind caring selfless man, so for us, nothing was ever too much. It felt like it wasn’t enough.

For these reasons and more, we are doing this topic.

2. Journal My Journey

2.1 About the Founder

“After years of exploration, Nathaniel discovered the transformative power of journaling and therapy. It wasn’t an immediate revelation but a gradual realization that these simple acts held the key to unlocking his true self. Facing life’s challenges, he found solace in faith. At twenty-five, the profound impact of putting pen to paper struck him. Journaling became his sanctuary, a lifeline to his true self. Now, through Journal My Journey, Nathaniel aspires to guide others to self-discovery and purpose”…

“A young man raised with a troubled childhood born in west London.

My story includes addiction, bullying, self-identity, religion, mental health, bad decisions, guilt, regret and shame.

But established my purpose and acceptance

I hope to do nothing but be transparent and an encouragement to those who need it”.

3. Examples of Men talking about their feelings

3.1 Why guys avoid talking about feelings?

“Some men feel they don’t have the tools to accurately describe, express, and solve their problems in a relationship. The fear of failing to convey their emotions properly causes them to avoid the subject altogether to avoid feelings of humiliation or defeat”. (4 Feb 2023).

3.2 Why do men find it hard to talk about their feelings

“Men often feel that they need to be self-reliant and provide for their loved ones, so it is not appropriate to express their emotions. This behaviour can be reinforced in the stereotype of the heroic male, so often represented in popular culture”.

3.3 Why is it so hard for men to talk about feelings?

“The first reason is simple: Men often aren’t encouraged to talk about their feelings. In fact, they’re sometimes discouraged from doing so. Additionally, men often tend to shy away from vulnerable conversations. “It’s a little social, but it’s also a little biological,” Vossenkemper explains”.

4. Our Final Thoughts

Life can be a precious gift. As we move through each day we face highs, lows, challenges, adventures, happy times, and sad times. But through this all, taking time to realise and acknowledge how we are feeling mentally and physically is of high importance. Without our health, we do not have much.

We hope this topic will be of use to those who read it.
