2. Dignity Action Day 1st February

We have only become aware of this, this year. We knew this was something we definitely wanted to help spread awareness of. It is a matter that is close to our hearts. We feel it is ever so important for anyone who is in a care home/hospital or receiving professional care to be treated with:

  • Dignity
  • Respect
  • Empathy

The list above is just naming a few. The mental state of mind has so much to do with healing of any kind. If you’re not mentally strong, then you will struggle to be physically strong. As I’m typing I am filled with passion for how strongly we feel about this.

As a family we have not had a good experience with our Dad being in a hospital, as a result, we have made an official complaint against the Trust, and are currently awaiting their final decision.

No matter your age, race, religion all lives matter, and everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Things like this remind us of how strongly we feel about this matter.

2.7 How do you give patients dignity?

“At the same time, do not patronize or speak down to a patient. Practice patience and empathy. Do not make jokes about the patient even if you think they are out of earshot. Answer patients honestly to build trust and take time to listen to their concerns”. (27 Jul 2017).

Having dignity means being treated with respect AND treating others with respect”. (15 May 2019).

2.11 Why is it important to maintain dignity?

“Care not including dignity would negatively affect patients’ recovery,3 while preserving dignified care enhances patients’ recovery and promotes emotional comfort. Therefore, respect and dignity are crucial to grant high-quality health care. … Thus, respect to each patient’s dignity is important to develop self-worth”. (1 Mar 2017).

2.12 What is a dignity champion?

“A Dignity Champion is a person who believes that being treated with dignity is a basic human right, not an optional extra. They believe that care provision must be: compassionate, person-centred, efficient and effective, and are willing to take action in order to achieve this”. (22 Aug 2016).

Heart conditions are something that is very close to us. Our Dad was hospitalised in September 2016, sadly passing away in March 2017. His original diagnosis, when admitted to the hospital, was Infective Endocarditis. This is a serious and life-threatening heart condition. We had never heard of it before and could not believe such a serious condition could start from your gums. We have topics on Infective Endocarditis and Infective Endocarditis and Blindness.
