From time to time, we write a draft topic as it comes to mind, but it isn’t always the right time to publish it when it has come to mind.
This topic is one of those, we wrote a draft with no title, and the topic remained that way until now. We came across a term that we could relate to that made us want to find out more.
This topic is blended with the draft we had written blended with the new information we have since come to discover…….
Please see Masked Grief which covers:

1. introduction
From time to time, we write a draft topic as it comes to mind, but it isn’t always the right time to publish it when it has come to mind, or it might not even be a plan to publish it as a topic. It is sometimes just a way of releasing feelings at that specific moment in time. The writing for this came about because we had been:
- Thinking and processing our thoughts and feelings along our grief journey
- Processing how we have and are dealing with our loss.
- Taking in stories that we read or see that relate to us.
It was one of those random moments when thoughts and feelings take over, with no defined purpose of becoming a topic. This is what happened here, we wrote a draft with no title, and the topic remained that way until now. We came across a term that we could relate to that made us want to find out more.
The term we came across was:
“Masked Grief when experienced you may not be aware that symptoms such as anger or impulsive behaviour are related to a loss”
Within the article it then goes on to say:
“Masked grief is a form of complicated grief. This type of complication arises when you decide to push your feelings down. You suppress your grief and mask it with what you perceive to be more “normal” behavior”.
My sister and I can most definitely relate to this statement. This is how we have and are dealing with everything we have gone through from the moment our Dad was hospitalised in September 2016. Very often we say we are aware it is probably not the best way to deal with things, but for us, it has become the only way we know how.
For these reasons we are grateful we have a platform to share these things that we find out. There could be others going through something similar, or someone could know someone going through something similar.
We are living through challenging times worldwide, our mental state of mind and wellbeing is even more important, self-care is also important. Because of this, we will do our best to continue trying to help share and spread awareness of matters.
This topic is blended with the draft we had previously written and the new information we have since come to discover, we have given it a title and we are now able to publish it.

3. YouTube Video Celine Dion – and our thoughts of how we relate to this
Randomly we discovered an interview with Celine Dion speaking about the loss of her husband. One of the things Celine Dion stated is that when she learnt her husband had been diagnosed with cancer her body shut down. You get on with what you have to do…
This is exactly what happened to my sister when I Dad was hospitalised in September 2016. These feelings did not happen right away, but once we realised things were not at all straightforward and we were faced with new situations every single day, this is when we started shutting down our feelings and emotions and focusing on what needed to be done to help our Dad whilst he was in the hospital. This has been us up until this very day.
This is exactly how my sister and I feel. Just recently my sister was speaking of a memory as we were listening to music. It sparked a memory of our Dad sitting playing his music and the joy in his face when doing it.
Memories of videos recorded showing our Dad and my sisters eldest son together. We forgot he used to call him Dad. Hearing our Dad’s accent, and how natural they were together as Dad and Grandad, their own special loving bond. The hat of our Dads that Antonio would always put on as soon as he saw our Dad.
It made me realise that I am shut down. We both are shut down, to the point these memories are locked away.
