1. Introduction to October Awareness Month 2022
It’s a bit late in the month to be doing this, however, we are very passionate about trying to help and spread awareness of matters that might not be well-spoken about.
Another reason we do this is that it is not always known how serious a condition can be until either you or someone you know is living it. And that can turn out to be a very harsh, scary and overwhelming reality. As an example, Diabetes is a fairly common condition, but the seriousness of how this can affect you isn’t highlighted enough. It can cause blindness, and numbness in the hands and feet which can have consequences as a result. Our Dad suffered from Diabetes, and loss of feeling in his hands and feet. As a result, he sadly ended up with significant burns to both his feet from the extremely hot bath water. (We have topics on Diabetes and diabetes awareness).
Also for our family when our Dad was diagnosed with a serious life-threatening heart condition: Infective Endocarditis. We had never heard of this before and so we had absolutely no idea or awareness of its seriousness. Sadly this condition made him go blind. (We have topics on Infective Endocarditis and Infective Endocarditis and Blindness) Even down to him suffering from Delirium due to infections caught as a result of his original diagnosis. We had no clue how this affects people until we were living through it. (We also have topics on Delirium and Delirium awareness).
Talking from my own experience, last year, in May 2021 I had a procedure done for a condition that is deemed to be common. Pilonidal Cyst. But what wasn’t made known to me until I was living it is when recovering from the surgery if the wound gets infected and leaks into your bloodstream you can end up being in the early stages of Sepsis. Just as I was, it was a very scary experience. (We have a topic on Sepsis, Sepsis Awareness, and my experience)
An illness/condition is an illness no matter how it affects you. Some are:
- Not visible and some are
- Life-threatening with serious side effects (such as blindness for example)
- Are terminal
For all of these reasons is why we will continue to do topics like this.
