Men’s Health Awareness Month November 2021

1. Introduction

Men’s Health is important, just as important as women’s. This is even more so the case as some conditions affect Men more than Women. Another reason why it is important is that just like grief, men’s health can also be deemed taboo. Men often do not find it easy to talk about matters of health the same as women do.

For my sister and I from the moment we became aware Men’s Health had an awareness month, we felt passionate about doing a topic on it. Our Dad was hospitalised in September 2016 (We also have topics on Misunderstood and Grief Men and Grief, Men’s Health Week: 15th – 21st June 2020, Men’s Health Week: 14th – 20th June 2021)

He had been diagnosed with Infective Endocarditis, unfortunately, the bacteria went into his eyes meaning that he lost his sight. He became bed-bound, he suffered various infections from the original diagnosis, one of the things he suffered from fairly frequently was delirium (we have topics on Infective Endocarditis, Infective Endocarditis and Blindness, Delirium and Delirium Awareness).

As a family we hadn’t heard of any of these conditions, it was extremely difficult times, but one of the main things we always had on our mind, and what we very often told the hospital staff, our Dad’s state of mind is so important, and if this is not acknowledged he would give up. We have no idea what it was like for him to endure everything he did during the time he was in the hospital. And our Dad wasn’t a person that would complain, he was an independent man, a kind caring considerate man. This is why it was more than heart-breaking knowing our Dad was going through this.

In a journey of sharing our journey, this is something that is very important, and we hope that it will help in spreading further awareness of the importance of Men’s Mental Health.
